I’m a great fan of Salil Tripathi, a veteran author who spent most of his time abroad. When I read his book “The Colonel who would Not Repent” on turbulent times of 1971 in Bangladesh, it made a lasting impact on me. He is a great story teller and a great researcher.
When I got to know about his new book “ The Gujaratis – A portrait of a Community”, I immediately latched on to it. I must admit that the narrative has been highly engaging.
The book delves on the narrative: what makes a community unique? How history, culture, and shared experiences shape who they are? The Gujaratis – A Portrait of a Community by Salil Tripathi is a fascinating exploration of Gujarati identity, blending personal narratives, historical insights, and cultural reflections. As a Gujarati himself, Tripathi takes readers on a journey to uncover the essence of being Gujarati—pride, pragmatism, resilience, and even the darker chapters of their history.
Let’s dive into this rich tapestry and discover what makes Gujaratis who they are.
The Key aspects of the Book
1. The Heart of Gujarati Identity: "Asmita"
The book revolves around the concept of "asmita"—a deep sense of pride and identity. This pride is rooted in:
· History: From the ancient Solanki dynasty to the struggles under colonial rule.
· Language:
The saying "વાત મારી જેને સમજતી નાથી, એ રમત તે હોય, ગુજરાતી નાથી”
(If you don’t understand my words, you’re not Gujarati) highlights linguistic pride.
· Contradictions: While some see "asmita" as inclusive, others tie it to religion, excluding minorities.
2. Historical Shadows and Triumphs
Gujarat’s past is a mix of glory and turmoil:
· Golden Age: The Solanki era (940 CE) is remembered with nostalgia.
· Invasions: The repeated attacks on Somnath Temple left a lasting scar.
· Colonial Rule: British influence brought both humiliation and economic opportunities.
· Freedom Struggle: Gandhi and Patel shaped not just Gujarat but all of India.
· 2002 Violence: A painful chapter that still influences Gujarati identity.
3. The Gujarati Diaspora: A Global Community
Gujaratis are everywhere—East Africa, the UK, the US—and their migration was driven by:
· Trade: From the Silk Road to diamond polishing in Surat.
· Entrepreneurship: A knack for business, from Mumbai to Mombasa.
· Diaspora Culture: The Swaminarayan movement keeps traditions alive abroad.
4. Complex Relationships: Marathas, Mumbai, and More
· Maratha Conflicts: Shivaji’s raids on Surat were resented, yet later, Marathas and Gujaratis shared governance.
· Bombay Battles: The fight over Mumbai (Maharashtra vs. Gujarat) deepened linguistic divides.
5. The Dark and Light of Gujarati Society
Tripathi doesn’t shy away from tough topics:
· Communal Violence: The 2002 riots remain a wound.
· Economic Shifts: Liberalization boosted pride but also eroded humility.
· Cultural Nuances: From cricket to dhokla, love, and humor—Gujaratis are a vibrant mix.
Why This Book Matters
The Gujaratis isn’t just a history lesson—it’s a mirror. It shows how identity is shaped by triumphs, tragedies, and everyday life. Whether you’re Gujarati or just curious about this dynamic community, Tripathi’s book offers a compelling, nuanced portrait.
Concluding Comments :
